The luxury motor, which retails for around £120,000 (CNY 1.1 million) in China, was seen tied with a traditional red ribbon.
Stunned onlookers watched as an excavator dumped soil directly onto the vehicle in Liaoning City in north-eastern China.
Adding to the utter madness, the car was fitted with a highly coveted and expensive ‘8888’ number plate.
In Chinese culture, the number 8 is associated with wealth and good luck, as reported byNeed To Know.
Lucky plates like these regularly trade for at least £11,000 (CNY 100,000).
The burial was reportedly for a businessman from the region.
Outraged internet users slammed the funeral as a display of grotesque, over-the-top extravagance.
One local said: “I’m so f***ing speechless.”
“I suspect someone will dig it up in a few days,” added another.
A third said: “A few years ago, there was a burial with over 10 grams of fine gold, but it got tomb-robbed a few days later.”
Civil Affairs Bureau officials in Liaoyang confirmed that the incident took place in the city’s Gongchangling District.
In a statement today (10 Apr), they strongly denied that the video was merely a staged social media stunt.
They said are fully aware of the viral burial and are actively investigating the exact circumstances behind it.
