Locals have been left horrified at a giant slick caused by 100 drums of oil dumped by flytippers on a road.

Crews rushed to shut the route before anyone was injured after residents raised the alarm over the huge spill.

The road was deemed too dangerous to drive on, forcing council workers to send gritters out despite temperatures reaching 27C.

It happened on Hollyfast Lane in Coventry, West Midlands.

Shocking pictures show the drums and the slick covering the route, as reported by Need To Know.

A Coventry City Council spokesperson said: “One of our gritters is gritting the lane despite it being 27 degrees.

“This is because someone has fly-tipped 100 drums of oil on that road.

“Yes. One hundred.

“A resident contacted us to tell us that the drums were all over Hollyfast Lane.

“Our crews quickly attended the site and shut it off before anyone could have an accident.

“Since then, they’ve been working tirelessly to clean the road.

“We’d like to say thank you to the residents who made us aware of this issue so we could act quickly.”

Lisa Boyle, one of the councillors representing the Bablake ward, said the incident as absolutely appalling.

She said: “It isn’t good at all – especially with spillage like that because that has to be controlled properly.

“There has been no end of fly-tipping in the area.

“There’s been mattresses, asbestos, furniture, couches

“It needs stronger measures within that area – either CCTV or it being monitored all the time.”

Anyone with information about the incident has been urged to contact the authority.
