An Uber driver has told how she became an amateur obstetrician “in a matter of seconds” after a passenger gave birth in her car.
Iara Alencar dos Santos, 30, accepted a 6km journey to take a woman and her mother-in-law from her home to a hospital on Monday (23 October).
It was only when she arrived at the pick-up point in Brasília, Brazil, that she realised her passenger was eight months pregnant.
During the drive, Sandy, 21, unexpectedly went into labour.
The footage shows Iara’s incredible reaction when Sandy gives birth in the backseat.
“It’s out”, the new mum shouts, as Iara asks “What’s out, girl?”.
Sandy then replies: “The head!”
Iara can be heard saying “my God in heaven” as she quickly stops the car to get out to help the mum and her mother-in-law.
“I went from being a driver to an obstetrician in a matter of seconds,” Iara, who is a mum herself and gave birth to her son by C-section, told local media.
“I knew she was in pain but I didn’t know the birth would be so fast.
“We never imagined that we wouldn’t have time to get to the hospital because it was so close. But the baby didn’t want to wait.”
It only took minutes for little Yure Adrian to come into the world.
The trio were just yards from the hospital when Iara stopped the car, honking the horn to alert the medics.
The cord was reportedly around the baby boy’s neck, with the driver carefully unwrapping it from the newborn.
She says she “didn’t feel fear” and is “still in ecstasy” over the incredible moment.
Doctors later came out to cut the cord while it was still in Iara’s hand, with the newborn peeing all over her clothes.
Sandy and Yure were then admitted to the hospital and Iara was free to leave.
She’s since been told that both mum and son are doing well.
Sandy, who also has a toddler daughter, has already been discharged.
Dad Michael Adrian, 31, who had already left for work when the drama unfolded, told local media he was grateful for Iara’s help.
He said: “For me, it’s touching the compassion she had for my wife. I have no words.
“I think it was a Godsend, this driver, because not everyone has that kind of compassion.
“The car got dirty, and she didn’t even want to charge for the trip.”
Yure is expected to be discharged in the coming days.
Michael added: “I’m already eager to order an Uber to leave the hospital.”
