A seven-year-old schoolgirl has drawn a heartbreaking picture of the highlight of her Christmas getting biscuits in a box from a food bank.

The girl – named Ellie – said the festive season was still “fun”.

But it was because it was the only time of year they got to eat biscuits.

The drawing was one of three revealed by the Big Help Project to help British families living in poverty.

The drawing shows her sitting around the table with her mum.

The pair have a box on the table that is labelled ‘Food Bank.’

They are eating a single biscuit each at the table.

Ellie wrote: “Christmas is always fun in my house.”

“A lady delivers a big box of food the night before.

“Mum always lets us eat the biscuits first.

“It’s the only time we have biscuits.”

The sad message was part of a homework task to “draw what Christmas looks like for you.

The charity also shared another task by 11-year-old Poppy.

Her poignant message reads: “Me, Mummy and Daddy play a game of how many layers we can wear.

“Daddy looks funny in his wooly hat.”

She drew a picture of her family in lots of warm layers next to a Christmas tree.

It shows the struggles many families are facing as a result of rising energy bills.

Ben, 10, penned another sad message.

He said: “This year Christmas is at anty Lisas house becos we had to leave ors.

“Me and my cusins are having a big sleepover.”

Ben drew a picture of six children sleeping in a bed.

A spokesperson for the Big Help Project said: “Christmas is a challenging time for anyone experiencing poverty, but for children who have grown up in these circumstances, this may be what the festive period has always looked like.

“Last year, 4.2 million children were living in poverty, and this is the reality for many of them.

“Our poster campaign has launched across the Liverpool City Region, with five posters depicting a homework task where the child has drawn what Christmas looks like to them.”

Earlier this month, the charity shared a 10-year-old girl’s heart-wrenching letter to Santa.

The little girl, called Lilly, wrote to Santa after her mum told her he was ‘too sick’ to visit and bring her any presents.

She wrote: “To Santa, mum told me you are sick this year and you can’t come to our house.

“I hope you get better soon.

“I think it would make my brother happy! Love Lilly xx (Age 10)”PS. We have been really good.”

The letter received a huge response from parents.

Stephanie To said: “Heartbreaking, can I make a donation.”

Collin Macculloch said: “I can’t believe we have to tell our kids Santa is unwell and it breaks my heart.”

“Very sad times,” said Nicola Davo.

Chekka Morgan said: “So sad this.”
