It’s no secret that everyday staples have exploded in price – but now a simple jar of coffee could set you back a whopping £9.95.

The product – a 190g jar of Nescafé Gold Alta Rice Blend – was spotted at a Co-Op branch in South Leicestershire by Elliot Conway.

He later shared the shocking find on X, with fellow shoppers left outraged, as reported by Need To Know.

“Absolute joke of a country (and it’s not even good coffee),” tweeted Elliot.

Kevin wrote: “Almost as expensive as cigarettes. No wonder aldi and lidl the places to go.”

To put this price into context, a 190g jar of Nescafe Gold Alta Rice Blend can be purchased for a comparatively cheap – but still pricey – £6.50 at Asda.

News of the expensive brew comes after health drinks that cost a mere £1.45 were recently photographed in security boxes at another Co-Op store.

In shocking photos taken at the supermarket’s branch in Ickenham, Uxbridge, 100ml ginger and turmeric own brand shots can be seen in security boxes.

Such measures are used to prevent shoplifting, which has been on the rise since the prices of everyday items exploded due to inflation.

One shocked shopper said: “It’s outrageous.

“Why put them on such low value products?

“Surely no one will pinch a healthy drink worth less than £1.50.”

The price of coffee has increased in high-street coffee shop chains, too.

New research from UCC Coffee found that a medium latte from Pret A Manger had risen in price from £2.75 in 2021 to £3.60 in 2024.

Coffee is reportedly becoming harder to grow because of environmental factors like global warming.

This has led to various problems including forcing some farmers to plant their crops on higher ground.

Jam Press has reached out to the Co-Op for comment.
