A woman was arrested for taking her dead ‘uncle’ to the bank to try to get a loan.

Érika de Souza Vieira Nunes took the corpse to the branch in a wheelchair yesterday (16 Apr).

She could be seen asking him to sign some papers as she held up his limp hand to place a pen in it.

Meanwhile, she could be seen securing his head as it lolled backwards with his mouth wide open.

She told him: “Uncle, are you listening?

“You need to sign. If you don’t sign, it won’t work. I can’t sign for you, I’m doing everything I can.”

A member of staff could be heard commenting: “He’s not well. He’s not getting any colour.”

Nunes replied: “He doesn’t say anything, he’s always like this.

Uncle, do you want to go to the emergency care unit again?”

She wanted a loan for 17,000 BRL (£2,600) from the bank in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Staff could clearly see the man was showing no signs of life, so they called the police.

Emergency medics arrived on the scene and confirmed that 68-year-old, Paulo Roberto Braga, had likely been dead for hours.

His body was taken to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for a post-mortem examination, as reported on Need to Know.

Nunes was arrested later that day on suspicion of attempted theft by way of fraud and desecration of a corpse.

Police chief Fábio Luiz said: “She tried to make it look like he was signing. He was already dead when he entered the bank.”

She told the police during questioning that she usually took care of her uncle, who was physically weak.

The police are now investigating how and when Braga died and if Nunes is actually his niece as claimed.
