A dopey beachgoer sparks panic after finding a WW2 bomb in the sand, and then they take it home.

The curious member of the public stumbled upon the metal object yesterday (8 Jul).

The German mortar bomb is thought to contain explosives.

They then reported it to the police.

Bomb disposal experts then went around to get it.

It happened at St Ouen’s Bay, north west of St Helier, on the Channel Islands.

A Jersey Police spokesperson said: “The Emergency Services Control Centre received a call from a member of the public who had taken home an item found in the sand dunes.

“The item is now being collected by Jersey’s Bomb Disposal Officer, as it appears to be a German mortar bomb body – potentially containing explosives.”

They added: “For your safety, please do not collect or move any items that may be remnants of World War II.

“Our Island is steeped in history, and while these discoveries can be fascinating, they can also be dangerous.

“This doesn’t often happen, but if you come across anything suspicious, leave it where it is and contact us.

“We will take your call, request for photos and location.”
