A feared drug trafficker who allegedly used a crocodile to make people disappear has been arrested.

Robinson Zuluaga Arroyo, known as “El Loco” – or “The Madman” – was taken into custody during a joint operation by the National Police and Navy.

He faces charges including homicide, drug trafficking, and illegal exploitation of natural resources.

Authorities say he allegedly disposed of victims by feeding their remains to a crocodile, which had previously been seized by police.

The arrest happened in Buenaventura, a notoriously dangerous port city on Colombia’s Pacific coast, as reported by Need To Know.

El Loco is believed to be linked to Los Espartanos, one of two gangs terrorising the area.

The operation came after investigations tied him to multiple forced disappearances in the region.

The ongoing gang conflict between Los Espartanos and rivals Los Shottas has wreaked havoc on the city.

So far this year, police have arrested around 140 members of the two groups, most from Los Espartanos.

The gangs are reportedly fighting for control of sea access, ideal for exporting cocaine internationally.

The violence – including threats, murders, disappearances, and extortion – has forced many residents to flee their homes.

The National Police announced the arrest on 19 August.

A spokesman said: “We reaffirm our commitment to taking strong action against the criminal groups that threaten the safety and calm of Buenaventura.”
