Celebrity Traitors star Sir Stephen Fry has thrown his weight behind a campaign to make fireworks quieter after terrified horses were injured and killed by loud bangs.

The 68-year-old national treasure has joined more than 100,000 people in signing a petition calling to cut the maximum noise level of fireworks from 120 to 90 decibels.

The Faithful star – who was dramatically booted off the hit BBC show by suspicious celebs at Ardross Castle – is now using his time away from the game to make a real-world difference.

The campaign, launched by Redwings Horse Sanctuary, comes after three of their beloved residents – Cinders, Sprite and Percy – tragically died following incidents linked to fireworks being let off nearby.

Sir Stephen said: “I’ve long admired the work of Redwings, and it’s become something of a tradition for me to support the work of this wonderful charity.

“I was delighted to offer my voice to their campaign asking for a reduction in the maximum volume of consumer fireworks by signing their petition and I would really encourage everyone to get behind this.”

The petition, which has now passed 108,000 signatures, means Parliament must consider it for debate, as reported by Need To Know.

Sir Stephen has been joined by other celebs including Coronation Street icon Kate Ford and Love Island’s Olivia Bowen, who’ve also backed the cause.

The Government responded to the petition on 23 October.

A Department for Business and Trade spokesperson said: “The Government’s intention is to minimise the negative impact of fireworks and to support their considerate use, reducing the risks and disturbances to individuals, animals, and property.

“To inform any future action the Government will continue to engage with businesses, consumer groups and charities to gather evidence on the issues with and impacts of fireworks.”

The petition remains open for more signatures as campaigners push to make Bonfire Night celebrations safer for animals across the UK.
