But it was the pensioner who stunned onlookers – taking control early on and flooring her younger rival.
The drama unfolded at around 2pm on 25 April aboard a Shanghai Metro Line 1 train in Shanghai, as reported by Need To Know.
Passengers filmed the chaotic scenes as the pair grappled in the carriage, with the clip later racking up more than one million views online.
The younger woman briefly fought back by grabbing the older woman’s hair before the pensioner returned the favour and dragged her down again.
The pair wrestled on the floor as stunned commuters looked on, with handbags, phones and belongings scattered across the carriage.
At one point, the older woman got back to her feet and calmly sat down on the very seat they had been arguing over.
A fellow passenger tried to intervene but was unable to break up the fight.
Both women have since been arrested and placed under administrative detention.
One eyewitness said: “In a Shanghai Metro Line 1 train car, a 32-year-old woman and a 66-year-old lady got into a physical fight over grabbing a seat.
“Currently, the police have initiated administrative proceedings to handle the case.
“Watching the video, this young woman is clearly no match for the older lady at all.
“So yeah, it’s true that working folks really don’t have the same physical condition as retirees.”
