BBQ-loving Aussie blokes are refusing to go vegan because it isn’t “manly” enough, boffins say.
Researchers found that men Down Under are not willing to give up their bangers and burgers.
The main reason is they feel eating meat is a way of “enacting their masculinity.”
Fellas who identify as more masculine had a lower likelihood of reducing meat consumption or considering veganism, the study found.
It also suggests that “manlier” men have a greater belief that eating meat is normal.
Blokes restrict their meat intake and consider vegetarianism less than women, the experts found.
In total 5,244 men and women were surveyed as part of the study.
More masculine men and more feminine women were found to share the same opinions on eating meat.
Both categories view eating meat as ‘natural.’
The research was led by Dr Samantha Stanley at the University of Canberra, in Australia.
It found: “Our findings suggest that men in Australia may resist giving up meat because eating meat is a way of enacting their masculinity.
”We also showed that more feminine women – and more masculine men – viewed meat as more natural, necessary, and nice.
”This raises the interesting possibility that self-rated gender typicality may be equally predictive of men and women’s meat-related attitudes, though men’s masculinity more strongly predicts meat-related behaviours.
”Meat reduction appeals may benefit from considering the role of self-rated gender typicality and the way diets are tied to gender and identity more carefully.”
The report also stated: “Media representations of meat are gendered, and many advertisements position meat as ‘manly’.”
