A Venezuelan MP has been sharply criticised after posting a series of tweets praising Hitler.
Alberto Aranguibel, an MP for the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, has been accused of anti-Semitism over his comments amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.
On Wednesday 27 December, he posted on X, writing: “Hitler did not deserve to have left life so prematurely; he had much left to do with his great work for the benefit of humanity.
“Today we know it when we see the atrocity of Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people.”
A critic hit back at the post, to which Aranguibel responded: “Go and give birth to a child for Netanyahu and then commit suicide.
“It will be your greatest achievement in the miserable fascist life you envision for yourself, cretin.”
Alberto José Aranguibel Brito has been a deputy for Miranda – Venezuela’s second-most-populous state – in the oil-rich country’s National Assembly since 2020.
In another tweet, posted on Sunday 24 December, he wrote: “What the pro-Zionist and pro-imperialist media says today justifying the Israeli genocide against the Palestinian people only confirms that what Hitler did against the Jews yesterday was correct.
“There is no other interpretation.”
And just yesterday (28 December), he retweeted a reply saying: “Totally agree. Jews are enemies of the world.”
Aranguibel has since taken down some of the tweets but has left others remaining on his page.
Between 1941 and 1945, six million Jews died horrifically during the Holocaust.
The Latin American Office of the Simon Wiesenthal Center – a Jewish human rights organisation – tweeted in response to Aranguibel’s posts:
“When those on the left vindicate the greatest hater in history, it is clear that hatred is ambidextrous.
“And the common target is the Jew.
“Anti-Semitism is always present when democracy and coexistence in diversity are absent.”
