Video gaming has become an incredibly popular activity amongst many different demographics. It’s not just a hobby enjoyed by younger men anymore, gaming is a pastime for all ages and genders.

Each year, thousands of new titles are released to the market, designed to cater to all of these different groups of people. Many of these games are sequels to successful franchises, re-releases of retro titles from a few decades ago, or re-hashed ideas that borrow from other titles.

But while there are plenty of popular and quality games amongst this ocean of content, old titles continue to be some of the most in-demand.

Retro games from the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s continue to entertain gamers of all generations, including both those who played them the first time around and those who are discovering them for the first time in 2024.

But there are some games that are even older than this, some that are hundreds or even thousands of years old, that continue to be a big hit amongst gamers.

Slots

Online slots can feel very modern when you play them today. Their high-definition graphics, smooth animations, and multi-dimensional gameplay make them incredibly immersive. The digital format of modern video slots makes them very versatile, with most online casinos offering a catalogue with thousands of different titles for their players to choose from. This approach allows them to appeal to more customers and stand out from other brands in a very crowded market.

Another way that they do this is by offering free spin promotions to new players when they sign up. These deals allow you to try out the casino’s software and games to see if if meets your needs before deciding whether to make a deposit. With so many of these offers out there, iGaming comparison site Oddschecker has created a list of operators here that you can use to see the best bonuses available right now.

But slot games haven’t always looked like this. They have evolved countless times over the centuries, dating back to their invention all the way back in the late 19th century. It was a German American known as Charles August Fey who created the first proper slot machine that he called the “Liberty Bell”.

It was a mechanical device with three reels and no bonus features or jackpots, so lacked a lot of today’s mod cons, but it was revolutionary at the time. So when you’re next enjoying a game of Starburst or Book of Ra from your phone, be thankful to Fey and his work more than a century ago.

Chess

While there are thousands of different board games available today, chess remains one of the most popular choices. Its enduring success lies in the intellectual challenge that it offers to those who sit on either side of the chequered board.

The game originates from India, where it was invented sometime around the 6th century CE. But while this game is over 1,500 years old, early versions were quite different to what we know today.

The original game, which was known as chaturanga, had different pieces modelled on the Indian army that included elephants, chariots, horsemen, and infantry, meaning that the game was actually a battle simulation.

Today, chess is enjoyed in its traditional physical form and online, with players using the latter to compete with similarly skilled opponents from around the world.

Checkers / Draughts

Known here, in the UK, as draughts, but as checkers in many other parts of the world, this game is considerably older than chess. The only recorded game that can still be played today that is older is Senet, however, historians still do not know how accurate our interpretation of the game’s rules are, so it may have been lost to time.

Draughts, on the other hand, is a very well-understood game that has been enjoyed for about 5,000 years. Its history can be traced back to around 3000 BCE in southern Mesopotamia.

Unlike chess, which uses a very similar board, draughts doesn’t have different values for pieces. Each counter or disc is worth one point, so there is less strategy involved to win.

It’s still incredibly fun, though, so you can find draughts in many different forms online through your computer, smartphone, or tablet.
