Planning a getaway in a motorhome this year? The UK is home to a number of legendary routes, and the chances are that you’re not far from one of them. Whether you’re looking for a stunning view of a windswept coastline, or a winding path through craggy mountains, there’s a route that will suit you and your motorhome. Let’s take stock of a few of the best examples.
Preparing for Your Motorhome Adventure
Before setting out, you’ll want to ensure your vehicle is fit for purpose. This might mean getting the MOT done, doing your packing, and investing in the right specialised motorhome insurance.
The North Coast 500, Scotland
Arguably the most iconic route in the country, the North Coast 500 (or NC500) covers just over five hundred miles of some of the most rugged and evocative landscape in the country. As the name suggests, you’ll be going around the northernmost tip of Scotland, and along the way, you’ll find gorgeous castles, lochs, and mountains. Of course, this being a favourite for motorhome enthusiasts, you’ll find plenty of campsites and other stopping places along the way.
The Atlantic Highway, South West England
At the other end of the country, we find the equally incredible Atlantic Highway. With its help, you’ll be treated to excellent views of some of the most amazing beaches and cliffside viewpoints in Devon and Cornwall. Some of the most famous Cornish towns, like Tintagel and Bude, can be found along the way.
Snowdonia and the Llanberis Pass, Wales
If you’d prefer something a little bit more mountainous, then Snowdonia has plenty to appreciate. The route that takes you through the famous Llanberis Pass is a particular treat; along the way, you’ll see lush green valleys, still blue lakes, and towering mountain peaks on either side. This place might appeal especially to hikers and those looking for an active break: there are hundreds of trails strewn across the region, which cater to hikers of every level of skill.
Causeway Coastal Route, Northern Ireland
The Giant’s Causeway, with its distinctive coastal rock formations, is among the most iconic tourist attractions in the country. But there’s more to see along this famous coastal route than the Causeway itself. Stop off at the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, or at the quaint little town of Ballycastle. With a fantastic blend of stunning coastline and sweeping farmland, this is a route that will provide a varied break to motorhome travellers.
The Lake District Loop, Cumbria
The Lake District is arguably the most popular outdoor tourist destination in the country. Travel through this incredible national park, and you’ll find hills, villages, and (of course) lakes. Windermere, Keswick and Ullswater are the most famous attractions – but there are plenty of hidden gems available only to campers. Go seek them out!
