The giant structure was being erected off the coast when powerful gusts sent it crashing into shallow water.
It began to fall just as workers were finishing assembling it.
Three people were coming down from the 184ft tall attraction at the time of the collapse.
The tragedy happened at Lake Araçatiba, in Maricá, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, yesterday (16 Dec)
Two other workers were taken to a different hospital with injuries.
Both are reportedly out of danger.
Officials for the municipality said: “As soon as the Civil Defence issued a rain alert at 3:45pm, the company responsible for assembling the tree began evacuating the workers.
“However, they were caught off guard by a sudden storm with strong winds and heavy rain, which brought the structure down in a matter of seconds.”
A show was set to take place at the lagoon on Thursday (19 Dec), as reported by Need To Know.
There was going to be a deck, which would allow visitors to take photos close to the tree.
Local authorities say they are investigating the causes of the accident and are providing support to the victims and their families.
