During the operation, the two alleged thieves split up and one of them sought refuge on the roof of a house.
When the police spotted the suspect hiding on the roof, he reportedly started throwing stones at the police.
In retaliation, the cops reached into their arsenal and pulled out several slingshots.
But it was part of a sneaky plan to seize the suspect.
While two officers fired rocks at the suspects with the catapults, three colleagues sneaked around the back to capture the crook.
Using the catapult fire as a distraction, the cops managed to climb onto the roof undetected to arrest the man.
His accomplice was also detained nearby.
The arrests took place in the coastal town of Celestún located west of Cancun in Mexico on Tuesday (14 Jan).
The suspects, identified by their aliases La Morsa and El Pinocho, were taken to the municipal jail to await charges, as reported by Need To Know.
One local said: “Ancient technology not everyone can handle, they deserve respect.”

Juan added: “Our country is a joke.”
Yet Angel remarked: “The point was to neutralise and capture the thief.
“It doesn’t matter how, well done cops.”
