Food For Thought: How Food Companies Can Be More Socially Responsible

Social responsibility is all about making decisions that benefit society and the environment. As a modern food company, it’s important to take social responsibility seriously – many modern customers are becoming more conscious of where their food and drink comes from, and will refuse to buy from a brand that isn’t environmentally-friendly or promotes unfair labour practices.

There are many different ways in which food companies can strive to be more socially responsible. Below are just a few examples.

Know where your ingredients come from

Every ingredient you use should ideally be ethically and sustainably sourced. This involves choosing the right suppliers. For example, when choosing sugar suppliers, it could be important that the sugar comes from sustainable sugar farms and that working conditions on these farms are fair. Cheap ingredients are more likely to come from unethical sources. That said, you can still find affordable ingredients that have been ethically sourced by taking the time to do your supplier research.

Switch to sustainable packaging

A growing number of food companies are moving away from using disposable plastic packaging and are embracing biodegradable options like cardboard and paper. This could include using a paper bag to store coffee grounds in or a cardboard tray for a microwavable meal. Where this isn’t possible, recyclable plastics should be used and clear recycling instructions should be provided on the packaging. This post has a few sustainable packaging ideas that could be worth considering.

Conserve water and energy

Some food businesses use huge amounts of energy and water to produce their product. Consider ways in which you can reduce water and energy usage within your business to help reduce environmental damage. This could include using solar panels to generate power for your factory or finding ways to recycle wastewater. Organizing an environmental health inspection of your premises could help you to identify different ways of conserving water and energy that you may not have considered.

Partner with local charities

You can also become more socially responsible by working with charities. This could include donating a certain percentage of your proceeds to a certain charity, or helping to promote charitable causes within your marketing. You could also sponsor charity events or even donate some of your products to those in need (many restaurants have schemes in place for giving leftovers to the homeless). When choosing a charity to work with, consider a cause that you are passionate about. Local charities could be a good option if you are a local-targeted business.

Promote healthy living to your customers

Another way to be more socially responsible is to promote healthy living. Even if your product isn’t particularly healthy, you may be able to find ways to encourage exercise or consumption in moderation. Many companies produce healthy alternatives of their product to help promote healthy living such as zero-sugar versions of soda drinks, non-alcoholic versions of beers, or low-fat versions of snacks. When creating these healthy substitutes, it’s important to be honest about the health benefits.
