She claimed that he wasn’t her dog and she just found him in her yard.

But in reality she had let him suffer for a “long period of time.”

McCall pleaded guilty to one offence contrary to the Animal Welfare Act 2006.

The 27-year-old, of Ferndale Avenue Middlesbrough, was banned from keeping dogs for 15 years.

She was slapped with a two-year Community Order and ordered to pay £1,016 in costs. at Teesside magistrates court.

XL Bullies became a banned bread in December last year after a spate of attacks.

Owners now need to have an Certificate of Exemption to own one.

JPs heard that a vet had contacted the RSPCA on 21 February this year.

McCall had brought a dead dog into the practice earlier that day which she said had wandered into her garden.

She claimed she had given him food and put him in a crate and all appeared well until she checked on him the following morning, as reported on Need To Know.

The vet said: “He had clearly been dead for a while and I saw no likelihood of success in resuscitation.

“I believe this dog was either starved to death or was suffering from an untreated disease which led to his death.

“Either way, in my opinion this dog had suffered greatly for a long period of time.”

During the investigation an individual known to McCall also told the RSPCA Inspector that the dog didn’t belong to her.

The animal charity found photographs on social media of McCall with Blue when he was alive.

A spokesperson for the charity said: “It seemed a big coincidence that a dog had wandered into her garden and died.

“And she knew nothing about it.

“In an interview with the inspector she finally admitted the dog belonged to her.”

In mitigation the court heard on 11 September she was struggling with caring for him.
