A woman who broke her back after tripping while staring at her phone has lost a legal bid to sue a restaurant.
Shocking footage showed the moment she crashed down a set of steps as she left the venue, with the clip revealing she had been looking at her phone seconds earlier.
Despite initially walking away from the fall, the woman later discovered she had fractured her spine.
The woman, named Guo, sued for £6,500 to cover medical costs following the incident in Pudong, Shanghai, China.
The court heard that surveillance footage from outside the restaurant showed there was no rain, snow or ice on the steps at the time of the fall.
Ten days later, Guo went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a fracture to the right transverse process of her lumbar vertebra.
She claimed the restaurant operator and the building’s property management company had failed to meet safety requirements.
However, her case was dismissed, as reported by NeedToKnow.
Judges ruled the accident was entirely her own fault and that neither the restaurant nor the building managers were responsible for her decision to look at her phone while walking.
In its ruling, the Supreme People’s Court advised Guo to take responsibility for her own safety in future and not blame others.
