She dearly wanted to give her only son a dignified Christian burial, but did not have the means to transport the coffin to the cemetery.
So the National Police of Peru stepped in to help her.
Four uniformed cops carried the wooden coffin through rocky terrain for two kilometres in the rural village of Quillcaccasa in the southern Peruvian region of Ayacucho.
Elena wept as she walked alone in front of the coffin.
After reaching the cemetery, Darío was laid to rest in front of his mum, a crowd of villagers, and the four police officers.
The kind gesture was widely praised on social media, as reported by Need To Know.
One local said: “May he rest in peace. And thank you officers for helping his family.”
“This definitely deserves recognition,” added Doris.
Diana remarked: “Thank you officers. I’m thinking of the 90-year-old lady, I hope she receives help and support.”
