A teacher who raped a pupil has been jailed for 15 years – two decades after the crime was committed.

Gary Day-Davies has been locked up after he was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting a female pupil at both the school he taught at and his home.

The offences took place between 2006 and 2009 against a student at Salford school, as reported by Need To Know.

The pupil was invited to Day-Davies house for extra tuition, where he plied her with drugs and alcohol before sexually assaulting her.

The abuse continued during school time, with the teacher sexually assaulting the victim in the library and store cupboard in a classroom.

The brave victim reported him to Greater Manchester Police in 2022.

Her report allowed officers to conduct a thorough investigation.

Day-Davies, now 55, repeatedly denied the allegations against him, stating the former pupil and victim “must have just held a bit of a grudge” against him.

But on Monday (8 Jun), Day-Davies, from Swinton, Greater Manchester, was sentenced to 15 years in prison at Liverpool Crown Court.

He had been found guilty of three counts of rape, three of sexual assault and one of sexual assault by touching of a child.

During the court hearing, the victim read out the following powerful statement: “Since receiving the news of the guilty verdicts, I feel like an enormous weight was lifted off my shoulders.

“The emotional trauma bond that I have endured for the last 20 years has finally severed.

“I can eventually breathe and think for myself without constant fear of the consequences.

“I finally have justice – this is justice not for me as a child but now as an adult too.

“As much as the outcome gives me some form of closure, I have not fully processed the full extent of this situation yet.

“I know I have a long road ahead of me in terms of recovery and I am very much looking forward to see what the future looks like for me.”

Dave Ogden, Inspector from the Criminal Investigation Department in Salford, said: “Day-Davies took advantage of the young age of the survivor to invite her to his home and sexually abuse her.

“He further sexually abused the survivor in the library and store cupboard in a classroom.

“Time is no barrier when it comes to being sexually abused – no matter how long ago it was, or how old you were at the time, we will listen to you.

“We will support you, investigate, and act robustly against perpetrators. We will take your allegations seriously and treat you with dignity and respect.”
