A £1.50 pressure cooker sale sparked a stampede and brawls at a home appliances store.

Footage from inside shows the scenes of mayhem that unfolded.

Staff struggled to stem the tide of bodies as they spilt into the retail store.

The surge of people was so powerful that even the crowd control barriers could not hold them back.

Staff tried in vain to control the throng, but were utterly overwhelmed as scores of shoppers tussled and barged past each other.

Bargain hunters reportedly rushed to the store in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after it announced it was selling pressure cookers for just 10 BRL (£1.50).

The stampede ensued because the heavy discount applied only to the first 100 appliances, with just one item per person allowed.

Broomsticks, quilts, pillows, and footballs were also on sale and contributed to the scenes of chaos that took place.

The police were told that about 1,500 people had stormed the warehouse to get their hands on a cut-price deal on Friday (21 Jun).

A spokesperson told local media: “The police presence at the Location was increased to ensure the safety of the public and to keep traffic flowing on the main roads, including with Special Patrol and Crowd Control agents.”

The stampede was so dangerous that a store rep was taken to the police station to explain what had happened, as reported on Need To Know.

He was reportedly charged with violating the Consumer Protection Code by running advertisements that could cause harm to health.

The business in question, Tubarão Atacadão, said in a statement that it regretted the incident and would review its advertising strategies.

However, it insisted that “the promotion was designed to benefit a larger number of customers”.
