An angry mob clashed with the army after rumours of jailed drug lord El Chapo’s son was arrested.

The warzone-like scenes were filmed in and around Culiacán, Mexico, which is battling organised crime and drug-related violence.

The city and others in Sinaloa State have seen frequent gun battles between security forces and organised crime groups.

One clip from yesterday (29 Aug), shows a huge plume of thick, black smoke rising above a main road.

Others show a bus and a lorry ablaze as they partially block a road.

A final clip shows how an armed convoy came under heavy gunfire.

Local media say a confrontation between soldiers and suspected gang members in Paredones ended with an officer injured.

There were also several reports of slashed tyres in different areas of Culiacán.

The chaos erupted amid rumours that one of jailed drug lord El Chapo’s sons had been captured.

The arrest of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, aka “Chapito”, was reported by unofficial sources.

At the time of writing, the rumour had neither been confirmed nor denied by the authorities.

Other sources say soldiers were attacked by armed civilians as they searched for Jorge Humberto Figueroa, aka “El Perris”, from the Sinaloa Cartel.

Iván is one of the last remaining “Chapitos” at large, as reported by Need To Know.

“Chapitos” is the name for El Chapo’s son, who took over Joaquín Guzmán’s drug trafficking business.

Iván’s half-brothers, Joaquín Guzmán López and Ovidio Guzmán López, were captured and are now in U.S. custody.

His older brother, Jesús Alfredo Guzmán Salazar, remains free.

The U.S. authorities are offering a $10m reward for intel leading to Iván’s arrest or conviction.
