Trees are going to add a lot of beauty to your garden. They also offer shade and can help to increase the value of your property.

There are some best practices that you need to follow to ensure that they are healthy. If you are concerned about how you are going to take care of trees in your garden, here is how you should go about it.

Choosing the Right Trees

If you are planning to add some trees to your garden you need to seek out species that are well suited to your local climate. You also want to make sure that they fit in well with your soil conditions.

Native trees require less maintenance. They are also more resistant to local pests  and diseases. You should consider the trees’ mature size, and how much sunlight it needs before you plant it. This will help you to give them what it needs to thrive in your garden.

Proper Planting Techniques

The best thing you can do is to make sure that you are planting trees properly in the first place. You should dig a hole that is twice as wide as a root but no deeper than the original soil level.

Place a tree in the hole and fill it up with a mix of native soil as well as compost. You should avoid planting the tree too deep.

Water thoroughly once you finish planting it and mulch around the base. This ensures that you can retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Watering Your Trees

Young trees are going to require a lot more frequent watering. This is especially true during the first few years of growth. Deep watering is always best.during this time.

It will encourage the roots to go deeper into the soil. More established trees typically need less frequent watering. If there are drought like conditions happening then they may require supplemental watering to prevent stress from a occuring.

Pruning for Health and Shape

Regular pruning is going to help to maintain the tree’s shape. This will remove dead leaves and branches branches and promote healthy growth.

The best time to prune your tree depends on the species. However, winter is generally ideal for most trees as they are dormant at that time. You should use sharp, clean tools to make precise cuts.

If you have high branches then a pole saw can be useful to reach without needing a ladder. This will ensure that everything is done safely and efficiently.

Fertilizing for Strong Growth

Most trees will benefit from occasional fertilization. This is especially true if they are growing in poor soil. You should use a slow release and balanced fertilizer in early spring so that they can get essential nutrients.

Always try to avoid over fertilizing as this is going to lead to weed growth and increased vulnerability to different pests.

Mulching for Moisture Retention

Having a layer of organic mulch on the base of a tree is going to help to retain the soil, and moisture.

It will also prevent weed growth and regulate temperature. You should apply mulch in a donut shape and keep it a few inches away from the trunk because it prevents rot and pest interestation from happening.

Pest and Disease Management

Inspect your trees regularly for signs of pests or disease. This is very important. There are some common issues that you should look out for such as wilting, unusual growth and leave discoloration.

If you notice that there is a problem you must try to identify its cause before you apply any treatment. There are natural remedies such as neem oil or the introduction of beneficial insects into your garden that can help control pests.

Supporting Trees Against Harsh Weather

Young and newly planted trees may need some additional support. You should consider staking them so that they can withstand strong winds.

You should secure stakes loosely and remove them once a tree is stable. This will avoid restricting natural growth. In winter, you should consider wrapping the trunks of the young trees to prevent them from sunscald as well as frost.

Caring for the trees in your garden is going to require a lot of attention on your part. There is a lot of pruning and watering to do. You will need to do pest management and ensure the health of your soil.

However, it will all be worth it. In the end you are going to have a beautiful space that you can enjoy with your family and friends for a long time.
