Passengers screamed in terror as strong turbulence rocked a plane while it was trying to land.

The pilot decided to abort at the last moment and climbed back into the air, sparking fear among the passengers.

The crew then diverted to another airport after deciding the weather conditions were too severe.

A video taken through a cabin window showed the aircraft flying through turbulent weather with poor visibility.

Passengers screamed in fear as the plane rocked in the sky.

Another clip from inside the cabin showed the plane shaking as one traveller, reportedly an American woman, screamed: “Why? Why?”

The panicked moments were filmed on a flight from Ushuaia on the tip of southern Argentina to the capital Buenos Aires.

Aerolíneas Argentinas flight AR1879 was due to land at the Jorge Newbery Airfield at 8.50pm on Sunday evening (30 Mar).

But it was rerouted to nearby Montevideo in Uruguay due to the harsh weather conditions, as reported by Need To Know.

Leandro Vesco, a journalist with the newspaper La Nacion, was on board the flight at the time. He said: ” “We started hitting very violent turbulence about 20 minutes before landing.

“We were close to crashing, the pilot decided to pull up.

“We were able to get out of the Jorge Newbery Airfield, but were stuck in turbulence for the next 20 minutes.

“When the turbulence hit, there were lots of screams.

“The plane felt like it was going to break up so we diverted and landed in Montevideo.”

A passenger named Verónica said: “We left Ushuaia knowing there was an orange alert in Buenos Aires.

“While in the middle of landing, the turbulence and poor visibility were extreme.

“Some passengers suffered panic attacks, there was a lot of fear.”

She claimed: “It seemed like we were going to crash at one point, it was a terrifying sensation.

“The pilot made an escape manoeuvre, according to his words, and we landed in Montevideo.”

Daniel, a third passenger, had a different perspective on the incident: “We were in the final stages of landing and we could already see the lights on the ground very close up.

“And then the plane started to shake a lot.

“The pilot revved the engines and we began to climb.

“It took them a few moments to tell us what was happening, but it’s understandable.

“An American girl had a panic attack so a flight attendant calmed her down and gave her a seat close to theirs.”

An Aerolíneas Argentinas spokesperson said: “An escape manoeuvre occurs when the captain decides to abort an approach to ensure flight safety.

“These manoeuvres can be performed due to adverse weather conditions, mechanical failures, or the presence of air traffic in the landing path.

“In the midst of turbulence, and having performed a manoeuvre of this type, passengers may experience discomfort.

“However, it is a safety manoeuvre that is part of our protocols and is regularly trained by the pilots.”

Two other Aerolíneas Argentinas flights were diverted to Montevideo on the same evening due to the weather conditions
