“Idiot” beach-goers have been slammed after getting stuck in the mud, with five people rescued in one day.

The weekend saw soaring temperatures across the UK as many rushed to enjoy the sea and sand.

But disaster struck as several visitors waded into the water at low tide to cool down.

They promptly got lodged in the sand and needed assistance to get out.

On Saturday (12 Jul), RNLI Weston-super-mare’s lifeboat was called to six rescues – five of which were to assist people stuck in the mud.

One of the rescues, Tammy Facey from Birmingham, shared her experience.

“It was really weird being stuck, I’ve never experienced anything like it, and I’ve never had to consider quicksand or sinking sand when I visit the beach,” the 34-year-old, who runs a haircare company, told Need To Know.

“I was relieved when they [RNLI] came to us.

“I thought, ‘ Oh thank God, we can escape this hell hole safely!’

“I think it’s imperative that non-locals know that Sand Bay has the sinking sand and that they shouldn’t try to reach the sea – obvious as it sounds –because it turns into a mirage, you become delirious and dehydrated and exhausted, don’t do it.”

Another one of the unfortunate casualties themselves admitted that they had not been “aware of the dangers”.

“We waded through thigh-deep mud for an hour and a half to reach the sea,” the person, who was not named, said in a comment with the RNLI.

“I just wasn’t aware of the dangers of doing that.

“We got to the sea, and even though I was sinking, I was thrilled the tide was coming in as I thought I could cool down and swim.

“I genuinely was not aware of the danger; it didn’t even occur to me to call 999.

“I feel incredibly stupid.

“I can’t thank the RNLI enough.

“I think it’s really important to raise awareness.”

As hot temperatures continue, the rescue team is urging anyone visiting Weston beach not to be tempted to try and reach the water during low tide.

They said, “If you see anyone walking to the shoreline, please warn them of the dangers; you could save a life.”

Social media viewers have been left stunned by the stupidity.

Anne said: “I hope those rescued have made sizeable donations to match the size of their sizeable stupid actions.”

Mary added: “How can people say they were unaware of the dangers of wading through mud… no common sense, I guess and putting other lives at risk in the process.”

Michele said: “Oh jeez, is it the sun or the beer. Thank you all for all your hard work, especially wearing your full kit in that heat.”

Adrian added: “All I can say is bloody idiots.”

Christine said, “Unbelievable.”

Helen added: “They should be made to pay to be rescued for wasting the lifeboats’ time for their stupidity.”
