A woman was saved from being swept over a famous waterfall after going for a dip above it.

The hapless bather was carried towards the edge by the strength of the current.

Fellow swimmer Michael Smith managed to get to the woman and help her to safety.

But I was shocked by the danger they had been in.

It happened at the Meeting of Three Waters infinity pool above Glencoe waterfall, Ballachulish in the Highlands.

It is situated at the base of the Three Sisters mountains, where multiple streams converge to form the River Coe.

The location was used for scenes in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, as reported by Need To Know.

Michael, of Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, said: “I’m a risk taker and love finding anything waterfall and pool related.

“But this was different.

“Rain throughout the night and morning turned this normal, peaceful, tranquil pool into an extremely dangerous, quick spillway over the main waterfall at a very popular location – the meeting of the three waters main waterfall and top infinity pool.

“I was sitting for a while, stupidly daring myself to go in as this was one of the main reasons I’d come to the Scottish Highlands and didn’t want to leave without doing it.

“Soon after, a very nice lady came walking up all ready to go in, so it put me slightly at ease, and I started to get undressed.

“Before I knew it, she started to make her way to the water’s edge.

“As she entered, she began to swim out as you normally do.

“But because of the huge rush of the water entering the pool from the waterway above, it took her directly to the main rock, which is centred above the exit down the waterfall.

“As she realised that it was sucking her down the left passage, she tried to stop, but the current pulled her round, and she became stuck and tried to grab whatever she could.

“I got in to help her and quickly realised that even though I’m used to these sorts of waters, I struggled to control myself.

“I couldn’t plant my feet on the floor as the water had risen, so I tried to pull her to the centre of the rock so she was out of the path of the flow.

“But in doing so, I was starting to get sucked into the right passage.

“I managed to get myself centred behind her and the rock, and at that point we both slowly made our way out with me planting myself between the two rocks so she could go round me.

“Once we both got out safely, we laughed about it.

“But it wasn’t until later I realised how stupid it was.”
