A seagull which had a swastika dubbed on her head allegedly by a vile lag at a prison will never recover to be released into the wild.

The con was also suspected of pulling out some of Belinda’s feathers which means she couldn’t fly.

The Lesser Black Backed Gull is being cared for by experts.

It allegedly happened at HMP Isle of Wight in Newport on the island in June.

It is a Category B prison with over 1,000 inmates – many who are sex offenders.

East End gangsters The Krays, Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe and disgraced pop star Garry Glitter previously served time there.

Belinda is being looked after at Skippers Sanctuary – a local charity which looks after wild birds.

A spokesperson told Need To Know today (20 Nov): “She’s still at the sanctuary and it looks like her feathers won’t grow back properly for her to be released.

“The follicles must have been damaged when they were ripped out.”

Belinda has developed Bumblefoot – a bacterial infection of birds feet.

“She’s happy enough but has been in for treatment for bumblefoot recently – which is a direct result of her ordeal,” they added.

“A lack of feathers obviously means she can’t fly, and gulls who can’t fly are at risk of bumblefoot.

“This risk can be offset by regular swimming.

“But because Belinda has psychological trauma she doesn’t venture out into the pond like everyone else.

“She prefers to stay in the safety of the nighttime aviary or sitting in the shrubbery with her friends.

“Bumblefoot will be an ongoing concern for her, but vigilance is key, and when it flares up early intervention with antibiotics and antibacterial foot washes will keep it under control.

“But in herself she’s happy and sociable with the other gulls.”

Prison bosses and cops were investigating.

A Prison Service spokesperson said at the time: “We are taking this incident extremely seriously.

“Police are now investigating so it would be inappropriate to comment further

“But we will always push for the strongest punishment for violence of any kind.”

The Prison Service have been approached for further comment.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has been approached for comment.
