Outrage has been sparked after three cherry trees gifted to celebrate friendship between the UK and Japan were stolen from a park.

The trees had been newly planted as part of the Sakura Cherry Project.

They were donated as a symbol of peace and cooperation between the two countries.

But shortly after being planted at Arnos Court Park in Bristol, all three trees were taken along with most of their stakes, guards and even the explanatory sign.

Local officials said the incident was particularly unusual.

According to Bristol tree officers, it is the only location where such a theft has been reported.

The Sakura Cherry Tree Project aims to plant thousands of trees across the UK to celebrate ties between the two nations.

More than 8,000 trees have already been planted in nearly 1,000 locations nationwide.

The initiative has been backed at the highest level, with support from British Ambassador to Japan Julia Longbottom and Japanese Ambassador to the UK Hiroshi Suzuki.

Organisers said they were “very disappointed” by the theft.

They added that they would try to replace the trees next year, using larger stakes and guards to prevent a repeat incident.

A sign at the site explained the trees were specially selected to provide blossom and scent while marking UK-Japan friendship.

Cherry blossom, known as “sakura”, is widely seen as a symbol of Japan and represents beauty and renewal.

The incident has prompted anger from members of the public.

Heidi said: “Knew they wouldn’t last, we can’t have nice things.”

Doreen added: “Sh*t for brains scum bags. It’s a waste of time having anything nice with morons like that around.”

Joanna said: “Thieving scum. People are vile.”
