Coach passengers got the fright of their lives when the driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel and almost drove off a cliff.
The front half of the double-decker was left hanging over the void, mere inches from tragedy.
Miraculously, no one was injured.
One passenger said: “Most of us were asleep when we suddenly felt the bus veering onto an unpaved road.
“We felt the impact, and it jolted everyone awake.
“If we had been travelling at high speed, we would have gone straight, and that would have been a catastrophe.”
They also told local media: “When we realised we were left hanging on the edge of the road, they got us down with the help of a ladder.
“But fortunately, no passengers were injured, just a bit shaken.”
The authorities are now investigating the accident, which took place on the Pan-American Highway in Guaduas, north-west of Bogotá, Colombia.
The coach had started its 10-hour journey in Barrancabermeja on Tuesday (7 Nov) night and was bound for the Colombian capital.
One line of investigation is that the driver may have experienced a microsleep.
Another is that there may have been a mechanical failure when the driver took a curve.
The coach has since been removed following the accident on Wednesday (8 Nov).
The transport company the vehicle belongs to has not commented.
More than 3,500 people have died in road accidents in Colombia so far this year.
