The grocery store features a salad bar accessible to customers with a More card, offering various options along with a drink and dessert for £3.50.
Nevertheless, the 36-year-old, Elliot William, took a unique approach. Instead of assembling a conventional salad, he chose a bowl of shredded cheese, pressing it down to maximize the amount he could fit into the container.
Additionally, Elliot intentionally selected the priciest drink in the deal—a smoothie valued at £2.35—and included a protein yogurt.
Reflecting on his strategy, Elliot, a self-employed individual, emphasized, “Cheese is one of the most costly items on the salad bar,” as conveyed to NeedToKnow.co.uk.
“It was a social experiment to see how much cheese I could get into the tub. The cheese tasted fine. Some people on TikTok said they wouldn’t eat cheese that’s been breathed on, but I had no problem with it. People are very fussy about cheese that’s offered to the public.
In Morrison’s, it costs £2.80 for 500 grams of cheese, and I got slightly more than that. I could have got more but I didn’t want the tub to be overflowing with cheese.
The drink and the yogurt were expensive outside the meal deal too. I like smoothies but they cost a lot of money. So I’ve got a smoothie and a protein yogurt worth more than £4 for 70p. I think it’s worth it overall if you want the cheese and if you want the meal deal.”
Elliot’s inventive approach garnered a mixed response on TikTok. Some users hailed it as ingenious, while others expressed a preference for paying for the product rather than consuming “communal cheese.”
One user commented, “Nice idea, but I’d rather pay more for noncommunal cheese.”

Another mentioned, “The salad bar cheese has been breathed over, though.” Elliot’s unconventional tactic sparked diverse opinions, reflecting the varied perspectives on communal items and their perceived hygiene.
“We salute you,” said a third person.
Meanwhile, a fourth person simply concluded that this was the reason they couldn’t get any cheese to go with their actual salad at the bar.
“This is why there’s never any cheese in the salad bar,”

to which Elliot jokingly replied: “The game’s the game.”
He added that his biggest tip for anyone looking to bag a bargain is to shop around and buy in bulk when they see a good deal. Jam Press has contacted Morrison’s for comment.
