E-scooters have become popular as a convenient new urban transportation option in recent years. However, e-scooter injuries have increased as more riders take to city streets.

Educating yourself on proper safety precautions before hopping on an e-scooter can help ensure an enjoyable riding experience free of accidents. Simple preventative measures go a long way towards reducing risk and preventing needless injuries.

This article outlines five essential tips that all e-scooter riders should follow to stay safe while enjoying the benefits of these electric vehicles.

  1. Wear Proper Safety Gear

The #1 rule every e-scooter rider should follow, without exception, is always to wear a helmet. Helmets dramatically reduce the risk of severe head injuries in the event of an accident. Unfortunately, many e-scooter riders forego this essential precaution.

In addition to a helmet, consider wearing gloves, elbow pads, knee pads, and proper footwear. Sturdy shoes with good traction help maintain stability and prevent feet from slipping off the platform. Remove loose clothing that could get caught in locomoting parts.

Yes, safety gear may seem excessive for short urban e-scooters trips. But it only takes one lousy fall onto concrete to cause debilitating brain trauma, broken bones, or worse. Protect yourself adequately on every single ride.

  1. Follow Traffic Laws and Regulations

Do you want to help shape the future of transportation in your community? Then, safely operating your e-scooter in public spaces requires full compliance with traffic laws.

  • Comply with all traffic laws – use hand signals, obey lights and signs, stay in bike lanes
  • Ride carefully around cars – make eye contact, watch for opening doors, be ready to evade
  • Yield to pedestrians on sidewalks if allowed
  • Go slow and use horn in crowded areas
  • Be respectful when sharing paths with others
  • Ride in the direction of traffic, pull aside if causing congestion
  • Extra caution at intersections and blind turns
  1. Conduct Regular Maintenance Checks

Always make sure that your e-scooter is in proper condition. Do a quick safety inspection before every ride. Asses for cracks or damage to the frame, handlebars, or wheels that could cause failures. Test the brakes and confirm they’re functional. Ensure the throttle snaps back into place when released. Try all lights to verify they illuminate brightly.

If you discover any issues during your inspection, notify the company so the e-scooter can be taken for repair. Don’t risk your safety riding a damaged vehicle.

For your e-scooter, follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule diligently. Tighten loose screws and fasteners frequently since vibrations can loosen them over time. Keep tires properly inflated and replace them once treads become worn. Clean the chain and apply fresh lubricant routinely to prevent rust and excessive stretching.

Timely maintenance helps prevent mechanical problems or sudden failure of components mid-ride. Performing regular upkeep also extends the usable life of your investment. Pay attention to routine tune-ups and inspections.

  1. Stay Vigilant and Aware of Surroundings

Could staying vigilant be your best protection on an e-scooter? Keeping your eyes continuously scanning helps identify hazards early. What’s directly ahead? Are there any potholes or debris in the path farther down? Are cars pulling out suddenly? Avoid fixating on the scooter itself – head on a swivel means you spot trouble fast.

When visibility is low, ride slowly and use extreme caution. Be prepared to brake or take evasive action if someone or something appears suddenly in poor lighting. Always keep your hands firmly on the handlebars – don’t compromise your control.

Staying vigilant requires your full attention. Never use a phone or earbuds while riding. Don’t ride while intoxicated or attempt risky stunts. Remaining alert and in control is critical to preventing accidents caused by distracted driving or recklessness.

  1. Practice Safe Riding Techniques

The final component of safe e-scooter operation involves mastering proper riding mechanics. Start slowly in empty parking lots to learn balancing, turning, braking, dismounting, and other techniques before trying public streets. Practice defensive maneuvers like abrupt stops and quick turns at low speeds.

Mastery of balance and braking requires unity in motion. Weight forward to accelerate, spine back when braking. Absorb bumps through bent limbs. Let the body hover, shift, and sway harmoniously with the vehicle beneath. With time, balance becomes instinct and breaks second nature.

Come to a complete stop at traffic lights; don’t roll through. Pull off roads and paths if you’re traveling slower than surrounding traffic. Use extra caution on uneven or slippery surfaces that reduce stability and braking performance.

Taking time to hone your riding skills goes a long way towards staying upright and avoiding accidents. Stay confident in your abilities – always ride focused and within your control.

Final Thoughts

Do you want to enjoy e-scooters while supporting sustainable transportation? Prioritizing safety precautions allows you to reap these benefits responsibly. Always gear up, follow the rules, stay alert, and ride defensively to advance micro-mobility while avoiding preventable injuries.
