Dozens of thrill seekers were stranded at the top of a roller coaster following a technical problem.

The group were forced to stand outside of the ride’s cars about 164ft (50m) above the ground.

The ride stopped due to a problem with the sensors that automatically prevented the ride from departing for safety reasons, according to a park spokesperson.

The structure is also equipped with a ramp that allows the passengers to disembark the ride without the intervention of the fire department.

It happened on the Katun inverted roller coaster in the Mirabilandia theme park in Ravenna, Italy, on Saturday (13 Apr).

Dozens of thrill seekers were able to leave the ride, which opened in 2000, and safely return to the ground unharmed.

A Mirabilandia spokesperson said: “On Saturday 13 April, two stoppages of the Katun attraction were recorded.

“A sudden anomaly reported by the sensors interrupted the ride at pre-established points to allow the evacuation of visitors in total safety.”

The Katun ride can reach speeds of 65mph when travelling downhill and includes a 360 degree loop.

It is the longest inverted roller coaster in Europe and the world’s fourth tallest complete circuit coaster, as reported by Need To Know.

Mirabilandia is also home to the world’s tallest water coaster, the ‘Divertical’, as well as Europe’s second tallest Ferris wheel, the Eurowheel.
