A 19-year-old man from Huddersfield has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for the murder of two men outside a nightclub in Halifax.
Rashane Douglas was convicted of fatally stabbing Joshua Clark, 21, and Haidar Shah, 19, outside Maggie’s on Commercial Street on October 1 of last year.

During the attack, Douglas also stabbed 18-year-old Brandon Coupe. Though he was acquitted of attempted murder in Coupe’s case, Douglas was found guilty of wounding with intent and received a six-year sentence for that charge, alongside an additional 18-month sentence for possession of a knife with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. These sentences will be served concurrently.

Judge Rose, who presided over the case, highlighted the grave dangers of carrying a knife in public. “This case illustrates the tragic consequences that can follow when a young man carries a knife.
If you carry a knife, you are more likely to draw it; if you draw it, you are more likely to use it; if you use it, you are more likely to cause injury or death,” she stated in court.
During the trial, the jury heard that Douglas attacked the three men within seconds following an earlier dispute over a woman. The prosecution detailed how Douglas, angry that a woman he expected to meet was with Mr. Shah, confronted the victims, leading to a fight after the woman had left.
The impact of the tragedy on the victims’ families was poignantly conveyed in court statements. Haidar’s mother, Marium Shah, described her son as “the most beautiful person inside and out.”

His older brother, Shahzerb Shah, expressed profound grief, recounting the harrowing experience of witnessing his brother’s death. “I look at the pain in my mother’s eyes. I see the impact Haidar’s death has had on her, my sister, my brothers, and my niece,” he said, condemning Douglas for his actions and the attempted cover-up.
Rachel Clarke, Joshua’s mother, spoke of her deep bond with her son, calling him not just her child but her best friend. She lamented the loss of his presence, which brought joy and humor into her life.

“Now my life just feels so empty and dark. My new normal is trying to navigate my way through life without Josh in it now that his life has been cruelly and needlessly ripped away from him by the actions of a brutal killer,” she shared, underscoring the profound and enduring pain caused by the loss.
The horrific incident, stemming from a seemingly minor altercation, underscores the devastating impact of knife violence and serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences that can arise from such actions.
