Ukraine has confirmed that British-supplied Challenger 2 tanks were used during a recent incursion into Russian territory, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict.
This comes as the UK’s Ministry of Defence reaffirms Ukraine’s right to self-defense, which it states includes operations inside Russia, although long-range Storm Shadow missiles are still restricted from use beyond Ukraine’s borders.

Ukrainian forces, under the command of Oleksandr Syrsky, have established control over 1,150 square kilometers of Russian territory in the Kursk region, setting up a military commandant’s office to maintain order.
Despite Russian claims of pushing Ukrainian troops back and retaking some areas, the situation remains dynamic, with Ukrainian advancements continuing.
The incursion, which began about ten days ago, has led to heightened tensions and emergency declarations in Russian border regions like Belgorod.
Western military experts have noted that Ukraine’s success in this offensive highlights the effective use of combined arms tactics, involving coordinated efforts with tanks, artillery, and electronic warfare.
The use of Western-supplied weaponry, including US and German armored vehicles, has bolstered Ukraine’s capabilities, although the UK has maintained restrictions on the use of certain long-range missiles within Russia.
Despite these limitations, Ukraine’s offensive has restored some confidence in its land warfare capabilities, though the long-term outcome of this incursion remains uncertain.
