Divers have found the skeletal remains of a mum and daughter who went missing 50 years ago in a sunken car.

Doris Wurst and Caren Wurst were last seen on 7 November 1974 in Plantation, Florida, US.

The 34-year-old mum, her three-year-old daughter, and her car were reported missing.

The case went cold in 1975, but several follow-up investigations were carried out in the following years.

They discovered what looked like the corroded remains of Doris’s 1961 Chevrolet Impala submerged in a canal on Saturday (10 August).

The car was nine feet deep and its windows were sealed.

Divers from the Broward Sheriff’s Office Forensic Dive Team found skeletal remains, baby toys, and girl’s clothes inside.

It took hours to tow the brittle car to the surface.

The remains still need to be identified through DNA and dental records, but the police are confident they belong to Doris and Caren.

The spot where the car was found lies just a few miles from where the pair were last seen.

Doris was from Pennsylvania but lived with her daughter in a trailer park in Plantation.

The circumstances around their disappearance remain a mystery, as reported by Need To Know.

It’s believed there was no crash barrier between the canal and the boulevard running along it in the decade they vanished.

Mike Sullivan, of Sunshine State Sonar, said: “I don’t think anybody’s ever going to be able to know why.”
