Sir Elton John has shared that he’s been struggling with a “severe eye infection” which has left him with “only limited vision” in one eye.
The legendary musician, now 77, posted on Instagram that while he is recovering, the process is “extremely slow,” and it will take time for his vision to return.
In the post to his 4.9 million followers, Elton expressed gratitude to the medical professionals and his family who’ve supported him during his recovery.
He shared, “Over the summer, I’ve been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye. I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye.” He added that he’s been spending the past weeks quietly recuperating at home, feeling optimistic about his progress.
Many of his famous friends and admirers have offered their support and well wishes.
Designer Donatella Versace commented, “Take your time and recover, Elton. We’ll be here waiting for your return when you’re healthy and ready.”
Other notable figures like actor Layton Williams and broadcaster Bob Harris also sent him messages of love and support.
Natalie Imbruglia, known for hits like “Torn,” wished him healing energy, while Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham sent “golden, healing vibes.”
This update comes shortly after the announcement that the singer’s documentary, Elton John: Never Too Late, will make its European premiere at the upcoming BFI London Film Festival.
Elton had previously announced his retirement from touring last year during a performance on Glastonbury’s Pyramid stage.
Despite stepping back from touring, Elton John isn’t stepping away from music. His longtime songwriting collaborator, Bernie Taupin, recently revealed that the pair have no intention of ending their creative partnership.
Taupin mentioned in an interview earlier this year that Elton has an “incredibly personal” new album expected to be released before Christmas.
Taupin doesn’t believe this will be Elton’s final record, signaling that there is still more to come from the artist who has captivated audiences for decades with hits like “Candle In The Wind,” “I’m Still Standing,” and “Saturday Night’s Alright For Fighting.”
Elton’s influence extends far beyond music, having been honored as a member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2021, a recognition of his immense contributions to both music and charity work over the years.
