A worker in a high-vis jacket, a member of the freight rail company MRS Logística, apparently tried to warn the woman.
But she continued running over the crossing.
The worker took a step forwards to try to stop the woman, but retreated when the train hurtled towards them.
The front of the locomotive rammed into the woman and knocked her to the ground.
She appeared to be struck a second time before lying in a heap next to the track.
The worker went to check on the woman as the train slowly came to a stop.
The accident took place in the municipality of Carandaí located north of Rio de Janeiro on Monday (2 June).
The train driver reportedly sounded the horn and applied the emergency brake when he saw the victim approaching, but was unable to stop in time.
The woman was taken to the Santana de Carandaí Municipal Hospital by ambulance with serious injuries.
The woman was said to be conscious when she arrived at the hospital, as reported by Need To Know.
A MRS Logística spokesperson said the train driver followed all safety protocols.
They added: “However, trains do not brake like cars and unfortunately the impact could not be avoided.
“We would like to highlight the importance of always taking care at level crossings, whether on foot or driving.
“Stopping before crossing, looking both ways, and listening carefully are simple but essential actions that help save lives.”
