A rescue horse who has helped over 1,000 children recover from trauma has retired after 12 years of devoted service.
Kira knows a little something about suffering herself.
She was rescued as a pony during a large RSPCA seizure alongside her friend Archie, with both animals suffering from rain scald [a skin infection] and malnourishment.

The New Forest X bay mare was taken to HorseWorld, where she has since made a home alongside other neglected, mistreated and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys.

Once she was rehabilitated, Kira, who had a gentle nature despite her rough start to life, was enrolled in the Bristol-based charity’s Discovery programme, which helps young people struggling with emotional, social and mental health challenges.
Each student is paired with a rescue horse to build confidence, communication skills, empathy and trust.
To date, Kira has taken part in 2,000 hours’ worth of sessions.

“Kira has been an absolute dream to work with from the very start,” said Sharon Howell, the course facilitator and founder.
She is a kind, thoughtful and loving mare that really cares for all the students she worked with.”
Sharon added: “Kira absolutely thrived on Discovery, you could tell she really loved seeing her students, and she particularly enjoyed a good pamper and groom!

“She is so patient and understanding, and really took the time to bond with each student and know what they needed at that time.”
The “one of a kind” horse will be “greatly missed”.
Kira’s milestone was officially recognised during a recent event held by the charity for sponsors to meet the animals and the support, reports Need To Know.

She was presented with a custom sash and trophy to mark her outstanding contribution.
Kira, who retires at the age of 20, now has time to enjoy her golden years among the rest of the charity’s herd.
