A Royal Navy bomb disposal team had been called to the beach after an ordnance was found at Slapton Sands, Devon, on Wednesday (2 Jul), as reported by Need To Know.
A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “Those of you whose lunch was disturbed around Slapton Sands by a large bang and a puff of smoke.
“This was the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team safely disposing of some live ordnance that was recovered.”
Police officers and coastguards closed off a section of the road, footpaths and the beach itself, ensuring a safe cordon was in place so that the device could be safely exploded in a controlled detonation.

The spokesperson added: “Kudos to them: very slick, very professional and very efficient.
“Don’t worry, it was taken from well outside the cordon; that walker didn’t just waltz into our cordon.”
