Cars aren’t a cheap purchase by any means, and while you might get a deal on one or two in your lifetime, the cost of running the car is another additional expense, never mind the cost to insure it and tax it on the road.
With that being said, when you spend money on a car, you want to get value for money. Getting more out of your car is possible when you make changes to how you look after it and maintain it in general.
Here are some helpful tips on how to get more out of your car throughout its lifetime on the road.
1. Stick to the service schedule
Sticking to a service schedule is helpful when it comes to getting the most out of your car’s performance. Servicing is important because, like the MOT, you want to make sure you’re addressing any and all problems with the car, whether you’ve noticed them or not.
Being mindful of your service schedule and when the last time you had the car serviced, will hopefully keep on top of it’s performance. It’ll also help reduce any additional costs you might need to make because you didn’t fix a problem sooner to avoid it getting worse.
Have a note or reminder in your calendar when an upcoming service is required and get it booked in sooner rather than later. Just like your own health, your car’s health is important too, to get checked regularly.
2. Check fluids regularly
Fluid levels can easily go down without you realising, and before you know it, it’s dangerously low or causing problems with the engine or other parts of the vehicle.
Check your fluids regularly, brushing up on your car knowledge of where the fluids are located and how much they should be topped up by.
There’s usually an indicator on each tank, but every vehicle is different, so you’ll want to know where yours are specifically, rather than relying on what other people say about their own cars.
During servicing, these fluids will be topped up, hence why it’s important to get it serviced if you don’t check your fluids regularly enough.
3. Be a mindful driver with good habits
Mindful driving is always an important one when it comes to looking after your car. By being a more mindful driver, you’re a better driver in general and avoid potential accidents happening as a result of being reckless.
Make sure you’re being a mindful driver at all times, regardless of where you’re driving to and from. Good habits when driving include being well aware of your speed at all times. You should also avoid harsh braking or accelerating.
It’s also worthwhile being mindful of the roads you’re driving on, too, as some roads can end up being uneven or having big holes in the road that damage your wheel alignment or other parts of the car in general.
4. Pay attention to dashboard lights
Dashboard lights are always something to pay attention to, even if you don’t know what half of them are when they initially flash up during ignition.
If you’re not clued up on all the dashboard lights, consult your driver’s manual for more guidance. Always check your dashboard once the ignition has started and check to see if there are any symbols or flashing lights that remain on.
