Saugeen Shores Police Service wrote: “Most species of gulls (including seagulls) are protected under the Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994 in Canada.
“This means it’s illegal to harm, kill, or disturb gulls, their nests, or their eggs.
“The fine for injuring or killing a gull is $490 (£266) and criminal charges could apply.”
Gulls play an important role in the ecosystem by helping to control pests and clean up food waste.

Their protection under the Migratory Birds Convention Act reflects Canada’s commitment to preserving biodiversity.
The incident served as a stark reminder that wildlife is not to be mistreated – regardless of how commonplace or bothersome some animals or birdlife may seem.
With seagulls protected under federal law, authorities are urging the public to act responsibly and respectfully when sharing outdoor spaces with animals.
Fines and criminal charges may follow for those who choose to ignore the rules, but more importantly, treating wildlife with care is a shared responsibility we all carry.
The incident occurred on Port Elgin Main, Ontario, Canada, over the weekend.
