A restaurant owner has been left “disgusted” after receiving a “racist” customer request asking for “no Black or overweight staff”.
Emma Odell, 50, has spoken out to urge people to think before they speak.
The owner of Acanteen restaurant, located in Chelmsford, Essex, received the request on 6 November 2025, reports Need To Know.

She’s thankful no other members of her staff read the message, especially as it could be “triggering” for some people.
In a clip, which has racked up 590,000 views and 8,000 likes, Emma says: “I’m absolutely fuming.”
The booking request, for four people, reads: “No Black or overweight staff serving me, please, thank you.”
Emma said: “I can’t even repeat it, it’s absolutely vile.
“I want to cry.
“I cannot believe that people like this exist – that are so racist and disgusting – and whoever you are, you know who you are, you’re so not welcome.”
Emma tells the prospective customer to “do one”.
The caption reads: “TRIGGER WARNING: This content may be upsetting to some of our guests and team.
“We have a zero tolerance approach towards bullying, harassment, racism, sexism or any other hateful behaviour.
“We respect different opinions; however, any behaviour that upsets or offends other guests or our wonderful team will be reported and/or treated with the utmost severity.
“We welcome everyone and love our inclusive team and community.
“To everyone who spreads love and acceptance, you will always be welcome here.”
Users have flocked to the comments to share their reactions.
“Omg Emma, this is disgusting. Well done for calling them out. I’d punish their names…see if anyone fancies giving them a visit,” one person said.
Someone else added: “This is vile! Utter dross! Well done to you for speaking out about this. I truly hope they call you back…how embarrassing and barbaric!”

“Bloody hell! What the hell is wrong with people!” commented Laura.
Chris said, “I’m so glad people call this out like this. We love your restaurant and the environment you create where everyone is welcome.”
“Should have taken the booking and let them come in just to turn them away at the door,” Tiffany added.

Emma reported the incident to Stop Hate UK, who have since referred it to Essex Police.
Jam Press contacted the Essex Police press department, which advised that the matter has been reported to them today (10 Nov), but they are unable to give further comment at present.
