The lift broke down at Longshan International Ski Resort in Lanzhou, China, at around 4pm on Saturday (17 Jan).
A resort spokesperson said the problem was first caused by a power outage.
The power was restored after around 20 minutes, but the ski lift’s drive gearbox jammed, trapping 104 skiers in the air.
Footage showed the victim stranded in the air as a worker told them over the loudspeaker: “Please do not open the guardrails and remain calm.”
By 6.47pm, the stranded tourists had been rescued and normal operations resumed.
They confirmed that no one was seriously injured.
However, many skiers suffered severe discomfort after being left in the cold air for several hours.
At 11.07pm that night, the resort issued an apology on their official WeChat account, as reported by Need To Know.
They said the affected tourists will be compensated for the inconvenience.
The cause of the malfunction is currently under investigation.
The resort also vowed to cooperate with relevant departments to carry out a comprehensive review of their safety protocols.
