In the footage, one woman was seen boosting the other up into the slippery basin so she could yank the sword free from the iconic figure.
The alleged theft took place at the Szermierz fountain on University Square in Wroclaw, Poland, in the early hours of Saturday morning (11 Jul).
City guards spotted the antics on live CCTV and raced to the scene, catching them in the act.
The 24-year-old sword thief was collared by the cops at 3.30am, but her friend managed to get away.
The clip went viral on Facebook with nearly 1 million views and hundreds of comments.
Officials slammed the stunt as reckless vandalism with real danger.
A spokesperson for Wroclaw City Hall said: “This wasn’t just daft, it was a hair’s breadth from disaster.”
“The fountain bowl is curved and slippery; a bad fall from that height could leave someone paralysed for life.”
They added that booze-fuelled revellers often try this stunt – and cameras always catch them within minutes.
“Worth it for a plastic sword? No chance.”
The sword, a replica to protect the original, was damaged during the theft, as reported by Need To Know.
The police confirmed that the 24-year-old woman faces charges for theft and damaging public property.
A new sword will set the culprit back around £120 (PLN 600) – plus fitting costs – on top of a fine for the offence.
Wroclaw’s fencer statue has been a student landmark since 1904.
The bare swordsman has long tempted revellers, but officials warn repeated thefts and climbs are no joke.
