The historic building in Merlo, Buenos Aires Province, was vandalised, looted and set on fire during the celebrations.
Primary School No. 1, founded in 1862, suffered extensive damage, as did neighbouring Secondary School No. 25, forcing pupils to miss classes.
According to witnesses, those responsible climbed onto the roof to gain entry, forced open doors, ransacked several parts of the building and even set the school’s water tanks on fire.
Johana, the mother of two pupils, told local media: “The children don’t have classes, and the teachers have to spend their time cleaning. It makes you angry, sad and want to cry.
“It already happened during the previous celebrations, after the last World Cup.
“These aren’t celebrations any more – this is vandalism. They’re criminals.”
Speaking about her daughter, Jorgelina, she added: “When she found out she couldn’t go to school, she burst into tears.”
Johana continued: “I don’t go to the celebrations because of things like this. This happens, the joy disappears because people start fighting.
“It stops being a family celebration and becomes something that frightens you.”
Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage, as reported by Need To Know.
About 5,000 miles away in Monterrey, Mexico, a man was caught on camera stealing an Argentina football shirt from a sports shop.
CCTV footage shows him selecting the jersey, folding it up, checking that no one was watching, and stuffing it down the front of his trousers.
The footage was shared by the store, Regio Jersey, and quickly went viral online.
The shop later revealed that the man had returned to pay for the shirt and apologised.
Regio Jersey wrote: “The person has now paid and apologised.
“Thanks to the social pressure from all of you.
“We keep our word and have deleted the post.”
