A couple, who own a popular pub, have decided to close their doors on Christmas Day in a bid to feed those struggling this festive season – offering a three-course meal for free.

Bonnie Tarleton and Ray Irwin are carrying out the selfless act for the second year in a row, after becoming inspired to “give back” to their local community.

The pair, aged 30 and 45, previously set up a soup kitchen to give people a nutritious meal and somewhere warm to go – and after seeing the turnout, began offering free Christmas dinners alongside their paying customers.

Due to pre-bookings, they had to turn down a number of those hoping to have a festive roast, including families who couldn’t afford to celebrate.

This year, to ensure no one is left behind, they’ve decided to block off the entire restaurant to those in need – with a three-course meal on offer, totally free of charge.

“I hated having to turn people away because of the limited space, and I knew I couldn’t do that again,” Bonnie, who owns the Guy Earl of Warwick pub in London, told AbsolutelyBusiness.com.

“In our local area, there are many homeless people and those struggling, especially at Christmas.

“This year, we’re keeping the bar open for paying customers and the restaurant will be for those who need a warm place to stay and a tasty dinner.”

Bonnie, who was inspired after speaking with a local homeless man, claims many people have phoned up asking to book in with them this festive season.

Although disappointed the restaurant won’t be open to paying customers, the 30-year-old says there has been a lot of understanding surrounding the situation.

In a post on Facebook, which has racked up over 750 likes and hundreds of comments, the couple announced their mission.

The caption reads: “We will be serving FREE Christmas meals to those in need on Christmas day.

“Whether you are on your own, financially stressed or find this day tough for whatever reason then please come down and the spend the day with us at no charge all on us, no judgements made, you will be made to feel more then welcome by ray and Bonnie.”

Users have flocked to the comments to share their reactions, with many people praising the pub owners.

“Such a great thing to do. You’re bringing real community to Welling,” Zirfas said.

Kimberley added: “Lovely people. All the best to you.”

“What a wonderful thing to do, well done,” Jennfier commented.

Pat said: “There are some lovely people about. Well done both.”

“You are both very special people to dedicate your time and hospitality to others at Christmas Well done!” Eileen added.

To get booked in, those interested can either message the pub on social media or give them a call.

Included is a three- course meal, as well as a little present each, which has been donated from those in the area.

Bonnie added: “Everyone has a different story to tell and I have never been one to judge.

“I hope to make this day special for anyone in need and it’ll cost us roughly a couple of hundred pounds depending on how many people book.

“But it’s all for a good cause.

“Giving something back is the smallest thing we can do and we’re hoping to make it bigger each year.

“We don’t want to be like the average pub that opens its doors to serve food and drinks with profit in mind.

“We’re a big part of the community and will always help anyone in need – no matter the circumstance.”
