A massive fire has erupted at Broadmoor Hospital in Crowthorne, a psychiatric facility known for housing some of Britain’s most notorious criminals. Thick black smoke is billowing into the sky as the blaze consumes a derelict building on the old hospital site.

Fortunately, the fire has not spread to the current hospital buildings, ensuring the safety of patients and staff.

Broadmoor Hospital, a high-security facility for men, has a grim history, having held infamous figures such as Ronnie Kray, the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe, Charles Bronson, and Robert Maudsley.

Currently, it houses individuals like Ian Ball, who attempted to kidnap Princess Anne in 1974, and Michael Adebowale, one of the men convicted in the murder of soldier Lee Rigby.

Thames Valley Police have arrived at the scene, managing road closures to contain the situation. A spokesperson confirmed that the fire is confined to the hospital premises and does not impact the broader road network.

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service received the call about the fire at 9:37 am on Saturday, 25 May. Firefighters from various stations, including Crowthorne, Bracknell, and Ascot, alongside crews from Hampshire and Surrey Fire and Rescue Services, have been dispatched to tackle the blaze.

Equipped with two aerial ladder platforms and other specialist vehicles, they found a well-developed fire upon arrival. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported, and everyone has been accounted for. The fire crews are expected to remain on site for an extended period to manage the incident. Authorities have advised the public to avoid the area and keep windows and doors closed.

Broadmoor Hospital has been operational since 1863, initially established under the Criminal Lunatics Act 1860, also known as the Broadmoor Act, for the “safe custody and treatment” of severely mentally ill criminals. It originally housed female patients before expanding to include men a year later.

Over the years, the facility has adapted to include modern psychiatric treatments, moving away from the rest and occupational therapy regimens of the Victorian era.

In recent years, Broadmoor has been the focus of public attention, notably in the Channel 5 documentary “Broadmoor: Serial Killers & High Security.” The program shed light on the harrowing experiences of staff working with some of the most dangerous individuals, revealing the challenges of maintaining safety and order in such a high-stakes environment.

Broadmoor is part of the West London NHS Trust and is one of three high-security psychiatric hospitals in England and Wales, providing specialized care and research.

The facility is recognized for its treatment of men aged 18 and over from London and the South of England who suffer from severe mental illnesses and personality disorders, posing significant risks to themselves or others. The Care Quality Commission currently rates Broadmoor as “Good.”

This incident highlights the ongoing complexities and risks associated with maintaining such a critical institution, one that plays a vital role in the psychiatric care and rehabilitation of some of the country’s most challenging patients.
