Two cops were killed when a train smashed into their patrol car on a level crossing.

Horror footage shows how the locomotive slammed into the side of the forced pickup truck at breakneck speed.

The car’s light bar was broken into pieces and sent flying.

Two officers were in the car responding to a call when the horror unfolded.

The driver, 31, and a 38-year-old corporal who was in the passenger seat were dead when the first responders arrived.

A breathalyser test confirmed that the 38-year-old train driver was not under the influence of alcohol at the time.

The Uruguayan authorities say the level crossing was clearly marked and that the driver would have been aware that the train was approaching.

The train was transporting pulp from Centenario to Montevideo and was fully loaded when the tragedy unfolded on Saturday (25 Jan).
