A child is fighting for their life after a bridge collapsed with the horror moment captured on a dashcam.

Five more people were injured and four vehicles were damaged.

The footage shows the moment the tarmac suddenly gave way.

Officials suspect a tipper lorry, which was allegedly overloaded with 102 tonnes of stone, was to blame but investigations are ongoing.

The camera could be seen shaking before the footage cuts out.

It happened on the Cabagan-Santa Maria Bridge, near Tuguegarao, north of Manila, in the Philippines.

A process to retrofit the 990m-long causeway was completed on 1 February.

Local media say 1.22b PHP (£16.6m) has been spent on it since construction began in November 2014.

The Cagayan River is still traversable thanks to an old bridge.

But only light vehicles are currently able to cross, as reported by Need To Know.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office – Cabagan released a statement about the collapse which happened last Thursday (27 Feb).

It said: “Thanks to the combined efforts of various members of the MDRRMC Cabagan and PDRRMC Isabela, the team quickly responded to assist the victims of the collapsed section of the new Cabagan-Santa Maria bridge at around 8 pm this evening.

“According to the MDRRMC, six victims were promptly taken to Milagros Albano District Hospital with minor injuries, except for one child who suffered more serious injuries and was immediately transferred to Cagayan Valley Medical Center.

“Four vehicles were involved in the incident, including a dump truck, two SUVs, and a motorcycle.

“The PNP Cabagan is continuing to gather details about the dump truck involved in the incident.

“Meanwhile, the Municipal Engineering Department of LGU Cabagan is coordinating with the DPWH to assess the overall damage to the collapsed section of the bridge.”
